Michael Bryant - Texture Artists at Framestore

1. How did you decide to take VFx path?

Growing up me and my cousin would always take our small hand held camera and film goofy videos and shorts; he had a passion for directing while I loved post production and visual effects! So I've been fortunate to have found this path at a young age and plan ahead my journey. Plus my love for animation classics and seeing 3D animation push boundaries continued to inspire me!

2. What was your biggest challenge while getting into the industry?

There will be plenty of challenges when getting into this industry; and it can seem quite the roller coaster. I didn't really have that one big challenge they all pushed me whether it came to my personal project to making my showreel and then the nerves of applying for roles and attending interviews.

Another small challenge I found was deciding to apply for Runner positions as I was always told to shy away from them for various reasons. However, I wouldn't have changed my path for the world as I got to see how Framestore operates as a company, I was able to talk to artists/learn from them and of course working with fellow runners who were also in your position really helped and these are still friends for life!

3. What is your typical day like?

For me a typical day at Framestore starts with our morning internal Lighting dailies, where we review the current shots in progress and any lookdev assets currently being worked on (Which is reviewed by our Head of Lighting). When I'm back at my desk I'll continue/start on my asset/shot depending on what I'm tasked with that day. Add some tea break in between! and at some point we will be called into Mixed Dailies where our VFX/CG Sup will review any work for final approval or notes. The days can go very quickly!!

4. What is your most memorable project, that you have worked on?

I think the most memorable project I've worked on so far has to be my first film and credit, Paddington 2! I was very privileged to work in a small team of 5 artists on the Pop Up Sequence and learnt so much. It was so surreal to finally be using my skills I learnt in University into practise working side by side with senior artists. Its funny how Paddington has become part of my family with my mum buying anything related to him!!

5. What advice would you give to a person who is trying to get to an industry?

My advice to anyone wanting to get into this wonderful industry is to just keep believing and working hard; if you are putting in the time to learn and work then you will get there! I think another thing is never ever be afraid to ask questions even when you've made it, we are all learning and have all come from the same background!

6. Is there a hot topic going around in industry at the moment? (If there is one)

I always find software and tools to be a hot topic in our industry as its always pushing what we can do as artists. The current strides that Allegorithmic's Painter/Designer is making is really helping myself and colleagues create quicker first passes to show to clients.
